BOTTOM LINE CONCLUSION:
Both of these lenses will work great on a Leica M8, but the Leica Summicron has the edge and the coding to make it work a little smoother.
The Summicron is sharp, but not TOO sharp, so it renders images in a smooth, but detailed way. The colors are sublime and the contrast is midway between Ultron and Elmarit. Just about perfect. There really are no flaws with this lens and it is a great F2 28mm lens for the Leica M system. Actually, it would be the BEST F2 28mm for the Leica system. Great for landscape, street, or portraits. The Ultron will be attractive to those who want to save the money and not pay the astronomical amount for an extra 15-20% in performance. For $550 or so, you can get a fast 28mm for your Leica that will give you smooth files, subdued colors, and a classic look. If you do not mind the softer corners and light fall off, this lens has loads of character. It is semi-soft at F2-F5.6 and by F8, it sharpens up. Shoot really close and it will be pretty sharp in the center. Also, some have complained about this lens back-focusing but my copy had ZERO back-focus. Never saw the problem, so to me it was a non issue. This lens is also great for portraits! Click here for the B&H Ultron page.
In this review I have provided a bunch of full-size samples ranging from 7MB to 15MB each and this costs me money in hosting as well as the hours and hours of my time.

UPDATE - After shooting with the Leica 28 Summicron even more I can say that without a doubt it is one of the best lenses I have ever used. The Ultron, while a nice little lens in its own right can not compete with the Leica, nor should it at 1/8th the price. The Lieca 28 Summicron is one heck of a 28mm and there is none better!
