VIDEO 1 - BASIC RAW CONVERSION WITH ADOBE CAMERA RAW
In this video I will show you how I take an improperly exposed JPEG and fix it during the RAW conversion. I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Adobe Camera Raw, which is built in to CS3. This image did not have any post processing in Photoshop. Only fixes in the raw conversion to get the image to where I wanted it to be.
First, here is the image I will be processing in the video. Here is the out of camera JPEG. You can click this image to get the full 10MP image.
Now here is the same image, but converted from the RAW file in Adobe Camera Raw. You can also click this image to get the full size version.

So, how did I process the above image to take it from a washed out image to one with depth, better color and drama? Watch the video to see the exact steps. No other processing was done outside of the RAW conversion. NO crazy post processing was done here! New improved video using screen video capture!
PHOTO LESSON 3 - HOW I PROCESS MY RAW IMAGES USING ADOBE CAMERA RAW - 3 VIDEO LESSONS!
Monday, August 31, 2009
It has now been 6 months since I launched this site, and in that time I have had about 847 e-mails from readers. Almost 150 e-mails per month, or on average about 5 per day. I want to say that it is AWESOME that some of you have contacted me. I love it!
One topic that creeps up in those e-mails often is about processing images. I get asked how I process my images at least 2-3 times a week. First off, I want to say that I shoot my M8 in DNG, or RAW mode 99% of the time. I feel shooting RAW provides you with an image that is at least DOUBLE the quality of shooting JPEG (on a Leica M8 at least).
Shooting in RAW, for those that are not aware, is basically like shooting a digital negative. This “negative” allows you to shoot your images and later, when you process the images, you can make changes to white balance, color, sharpness, exposure and various other things that will dramatically improve the quality of your images.
For example, lets say you shoot your camera in JPEG. You are shooting your daughters 1st birthday party and you want to treasure these images forever! When you go to look at the images later that day you see that some are overexposed, some are washed out, some have bad color due to the camera not reading the white balance correctly, etc etc.
If you have Adobe Photoshop you can do some things with the JPEGS but you can not work miracles. Basically, you cant polish a turd! If your exposure, color, or anything else is off then your images are ruined!
If your camera has a RAW mode I suggest you use it! In this 3 video series I will show you how I convert my RAW images for maximum quality. Go easy on me, its my very first video lesson ever. :) If you enjoy these, feel free to comment below and let me know!
